Abstract
This research project was to examine Piaget's conservation of number assessment using a Reusable Learning Object (RLO) as the delivery mechanism. The goal is to provide elementary teachers in improving student performance in early mathematics instruction. The data collected in the pilot research project indicates there is a definite need for some level of instruction to assist students in the obtainment of conservation of number. However, a longitudinal study that assesses student performance as it relates to conservation of number could provide researchers with insight into how the conceptualization of this Piagetian concept plays a role in the development of the student's mental process to progress in mathematics.. This will enable the researchers to conduct a rigorous field test and measure with greater precision the student's concept of conservation of number. The researchers will have an opportunity to explore the effects of the student's obtainment of conservation of number and corresponding ability to grasp the Commutative Law of Addition.
