Research results and work-in-progress information describe the impact of a longitudinal study based on a quasi-experimental design that investigates how preservice teachers use digital stories, Nicenet, and Alphasmarts to create a college culture for 40 at-risk middle school students. The presenters will share findings from the first three years of this 7-year study in which preservice teachers partner with the students to show them how to use digital tools. Digital storytelling, online mentoring, and word processing help engage the young adolescents in stimulating activities to improve their perceptions of college and to perform beyond school and district expectations.
