Abstract

The twenty-first century is characterised by massive upheavals to accepted and traditional ways of knowing and doing. Technological innovations and capabilities are expanding rapidly. Movement of knowledge, resources, and people around the globe is occurring more quickly, more pervasively, and more virtually than was once thought possible. Social and cultural institutions are redefining their roles and contributions to the social order, or dissolving in the face of irrelevance in a social context where expectations are fluid and ever-changing. The role definition for educators is also experiencing pressure, and the imperative to adjust to changing contexts and increasing social demands is stronger than ever. This paper explores possibilities for change within teacher education and suggests ways of adding value to established practices, ensuring the development of future proof teachers capable of enhancing the nation's contribution to global peace and prosperity in the new millennium.
