Abstract

This study examines the use of video annotation software to learn about the assessment of teaching candidates by clinical supervisors toward licensure requirements. The software allows users to record observations of teaching videos in real-time through verbal and visual annotations, using a microphone and mouse gestures. The resulting annotation includes the original video plus a "commentary track" that follows the action. Session attendees will view audio/video examples of how clinical supervisors used a state-mandated teacher observation instrument and the presenters will share the study's findings, which shed light on the inherent challenges in clinical supervision. The findings provide useful and timely information about how an emerging technology supports the supervision of preservice teachers and states' goals for improving students' learning.
