Abstract

As educators increasingly address the challenges and opportunities of online learning, it is essential that they are familiar with the broader debates on the Web over the status and cultural significance of virtual worlds. This paper examines a recent synchronized online discussion among three well-known bloggers on the question of Second Life. Clay Shirky's criticism of this virtual world as over-hyped and technologically unsophisticated is contrasted with the positions of Henry Jenkins and Beth Coleman, who argue for the value of this virtual environment in fostering a participatory culture, network based peer-production and a new media ecology. These arguments not only broaden our understanding of the pedagogical opportunities and limitations of virtual worlds, but many of their insights are directly relevant to the work of educators who are investigating the use of Second Life, or who are assessing its significance for reshaping the teaching-learning paradigm.
