Abstract

Hybrid Model-- A Winning Combination The goal of hybrid courses is to join the best features of in-class teaching with the best of online learning. In this presentation, Professors Smith and Adams will provide challenges to savor and pitfalls to avoid in creating and teaching hybrid courses. They will present the staff development model that launched the hybrid program at their college, describing the methodology that supported faculty in transforming traditional courses to hybrids. Through the use of technology and design tools, they will demonstrate how to redesign lecture or lab content into new online learning activities, such as case studies, tutorials, self-testing exercises, simulations, and online group collaborations. Specific assignments/projects that incorporate online resources such as podcasts, RSS and blogs will support the professors' preference for sources other than traditional textbooks. Additionally, they will share successful techniques in keeping distance learners engaged in the material and on track in meeting deadlines.
