Abstract

The University of Vermont's Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) has helped to bring synergy to efforts across campus to improve teaching and learning, especially where the greater integration of technology is concerned. UVM's Holly Buckland Parker will discuss CTL's programs that have helped assist faculty like Paul Martin to create innovative courses such as his freshman seminar on Canadian culture that incorporates iPods loaded with Canadian content, podcasting, blogging, a trip to Ottawa, and the creation of a residential learning community called Canada House. The successful collaboaration between Martin and the CTL, we will argue, shows some of the ways in which a center for teaching and learning can help to drive and support innovation on campuses where otherwise a faculty member may have insufficient resources or time to launch such an endeavor. Buckland Parker and Martin will then lead a discussion on best practices for faculty support of this nature.
