Abstract
An open-source software (OSS) learning environment was integrated into a graduate software engineering course, in which students learned software engineering processes through working in groups on OSS projects and using the OSS online tools. Design experiment approach was used to study the culture of the OSS learning environment, the characteristics of the OSS in a course setting, and the group dynamics. Participant observation and interviews data revealed that the OSS environment motivated and engaged students. Meanwhile, it was also observed that the OSS environment was sometimes interfered by the traditional culture. The study suggested a number of differences between a class OSS and a natural OSS to be considered for designing and integrating the OSS mechanism in the classroom setting.
