Abstract

The geographic and cultural literacy of youth in the United States compares unfavorably to youth in many other industrialized countries. In an age, in which the world is becoming increasingly interconnected, it is pertinent that our youth understand geography, evaluate stereotypes, and understand how individuals are perceived by others. This article initially explores the roots of this illiteracy and demonstrates how through the combination of technology and instruction from a global perspective geographic literacy and cultural awareness can be attained and concludes by providing digital resources that enable social studies teachers to more effectively teach geography components to their students.
