Abstract

Reports on an ongoing study of the use of free online translation software to support science students in college biology courses. Free translation tools are easily accessible via the Internet, and while they are imperfect in their effectiveness, students, faculty, and staff in educational environments are using them more and more frequently. This paper documents baseline data in a longitudinal study of their use in a major university and a nearby community college located in the southwestern United States, with particular focus on their utility in supporting English Language Learners (ELLs). The authors of this study are a professor of science and multimedia technology (Giza) at a major border University and a biology professor at a regional Community College (McCann). This paper reports on the results of work conducted so far.
