Abstract

Many researchers have suggested that blended learning can play an important role in relation to improving the quality, effectiveness and efficiency of learning processes - both in the context of electronic learning and conventional study environments. This paper explores the underlying rationale for this claim in terms of both intrinsic and extrinsic motivational drivers and how these can be activated through appropriately designed blended learning resources. A mechanism for expressing the composition of a blended environment is discussed and some initial ideas for assessing the effectiveness of blending algorithms are outlined.
