Abstract
Today's global challenges demand international competence. Americans who study abroad, participate in scholarly exchange programs, or study foreign areas and languages can be prepared for the demands of the 21st century. The United States currently lacks a coherent educational international policy to achieve this purpose. This project proposes ways that schools may enhance student motivation to participate in education abroad. The research creates the groundwork for a program in American schools that uses aural-visual learning tools to contribute a sense of immediacy, context, and depth to instruction of less commonly taught languages. The project consists of designing a series of training sessions based on: 1) the introduction of recommended aural-visual classroom tools; 2) written study guides; 3) group activities for using the tools; 3) a simple measure for assessing student feedback. These sessions are designed to help implement innovations in social studies, humanities, and language arts curricula.
