Abstract
The JISC in the UK has coined a number of terms to classify learning management systems. Recently JISC has employed the new term Personal Learning Environment (PLE). This paper considers the concepts of Learning Environments, whether Virtual (VLE), Managed (MLE) or Personal (PLE) in the light of accessibility and adaptability requirements. A specific case study is presented, based around the Portland project which aimed to support empowerment in young adults with severe disabilities. The discussion centres around the design and development process required to produce a learning environment, adaptable and accessible to students with specific requirements. The design and experiments demonstrate that the environment meets the needs and preferences of the learner. The project is then re-examined in the light of the IMS AccessForAll adaptability proposals. Finally there is a discussion of the issues for future designers of adaptable and inclusive personal learning environments.
