The current study explored how Wikis can be used as a support for knowledge building in a graduate-level distance education course. The course consisted of 15 students who collaboratively constructed a set of Wiki pages on a variety of topics for future classes to use as a knowledge resource. The goal of the research was to examine how students experienced working in a Wiki, and how Wikis might profitably be used as a distance education technology to foster knowledge building. Data were collected from three sources: the contents of the Wiki, an online questionnaire that the students completed anonymously, and student interviews. The results of the research, although preliminary, suggest that students viewed the construction of their wiki as an authentic task that had value both for themselves (as the developers of the wiki) and for future classes. There is also evidence to suggest that engagement in the Wiki activity promoted deeper learner investigations and engaged students in high-level cognitive processes.
