Abstract

iLab is an innovative project for enabling internet access to real labs. The iLab vision is to share expensive equipment and educational materials associated with lab experiments as broadly as possible within higher education and beyond. The faculty (teachers) is a crucial factor for the dissemination and the sustainability of such a project. This paper describes the design guidelines for a collaboration space for the higher-education teachers involved in the project. Such a collaboration space should enable the development of a distributed community of practice that support both existing and new teachers and that promotes effective communication that in turn will both influence the students' learning experience and provide useful feedback to the iLabs' developers. A Wiki with a predefined skeleton was designed to provide collaboration anchors. These collaboration anchors are intended to address community needs by providing some initial structure and content to guide, model and trigger further communication.
