Abstract

This paper provides a solid link between theory and practice for integrating online resources to support literacy development in young English language learners and their classmates in regular classroom settings. Culture and language are critical components of children's development, and therefore, practices cannot be developmentally appropriate unless they are responsive to cultural and linguistic diversity. Young English language learners should be working side-by-side with their native English classmates within the classroom. Critical areas of knowledge are presented from the literature and linked to online resources on two well-known foundations: appropriate language environments and the natural approach to second language acquisition. Guidelines for using technology with young children are offered that support young children learning English while collaborating with their native English-speaking classmates at the computer.
