Abstract

This paper addresses the design of the web-based tools and its impact on developing concept of "community of practice" in the implementation of electronic portfolios in Teacher Education programs. Many web-based tools are selected for the purpose of assessment, and the implementation of electronic portfolio, but the design of the web-based tools can impact significantly on the implementation of electronic portfolios. In addition, it also makes a difference in helping participants to develop a semse of community. The concept of community of practice which is defined as "set of relations among persons, activity, and world" (Lave & Wenger, 1991, p.98) has become a major theme of teacher education and professional development. However, the easiness of use and the design of the web-based tools could be critical to successful implementation of electronic portfolio and a strong sense of community of practice. This paper is an attempt to delineate the relationship between the design of a web-based tool (TaskStream) and student and faculty's perceptions of community of practice.
