Abstract

Abstract: With the rapid growth of blended learning at The University of Sydney, Australia, problems in the use of still images in online teaching and learning were identified. A broad-based project involving stakeholders across the University was initiated to address the problems. This resulted in two major outcomes: the development of a web site to assist academic teachers in the use of still images in online teaching and learning, and a series of professional development workshops. During the project, issues were identified which impacted on the use of still images in the online environment. These included a wide diversity in university teachers' information technology skills and needs, lack of university-owned digital image banks, deficiencies in software availability, misconceptions about copyright and intellectual property, and workload constraints. This paper demonstrates how each of these issues influenced the project development and how they were addressed in the resulting web site.
