Abstract

How can traditional academic textbooks be re-invented using Macromedia's Authorware, a tool commonly used to develop computer-based training for industry? The author, a university professor in K-12 teacher education, used Macromedia Authorware instead to design and develop a CD-ROM-based academic textbook that differs significantly from most "eTexts" on the academic market. The author uses the term interactive textware to describe the resulting project, Becoming a Teacher Through Action Research (BTAR), slated for release by Routledge in February 2006. Interactive textware combines elements of the traditional book metaphor with transactional reading theory and cognitive constructivism to create new learning possibilities for both students and instructors. This roundtable includes demonstrations of BTAR interactive textware and the Authorware development environment, as well as a discussion of BTAR field testing with students in 2004-2005. The process of publishing interactive textware through a traditional textbook publisher is also addressed.
