Abstract
It is generally acknowledged that using formative assessment properly can significantly improve student learning. Computers can be used in a number of ways to assist formative assessment. Unfortunately, currently available Computer Assisted Assessment applications and e-learning technologies do not support formative assessment of open-ended assignment tasks very well. This paper presents the results of a requirements analysis for transferring paper-based assessment skills into an e-learning environment to support formative assessment of electronically submitted assignments. A software system which satisfies the most important of these requirements is introduced.
