Abstract

Mental models have been researched and explored as a construct for understanding how people think since Kenneth Craik first suggested that the mind constructs "small-scale models" of reality to reason and anticipate events (Craik, 1943). However, the representation, development and assessment of mental models continue to be challenging issues for cognitive scientists and educators alike due to their dynamic, complex and theoretical nature (Jonassen, 1999). We present the object-oriented (OO) paradigm as a new method of operationalizing mental models to meet these challenges. Further, potential differences in defining or understanding objects based on cultural differences were considered.
