Abstract

The study evaluated the effects of a personalized computer-assisted mathematics problem-solving program on the performance and attitude of fourth grade Taiwanese students. The purpose of the study was to determine whether the personalized computer-assisted program in mathematics word problems improves student performance and attitude over the non-personalized program. A total of 165 Taiwanese fourth-grade students participated in the study. The research used the pretest-to-posttest to determine if the computer-assisted program was effective between the two groups. The problem-solving exam was based on mathematics word problems. All of the subjects were randomly assigned to a personalized or non-personalized group. In the personalized group, students completed a survey asking them what their favorite classes, fruits, sports, and supermarkets were. Their preferences were then used to create personalized mathematics word problems in the computer-assisted program. Both groups used the computer-assisted program for the pre-test, the mathematics word problem lessons, and post-test.
