Abstract
This brief paper will provide a definition of open-source software and an introduction to open-source applications and operating systems. The paper will describe the proprietary software model as a contrast to the open-source model, and then highlight fundamental aspects of open-source software demonstrating the financial and social advantages to implementing an open-source software solution in the field of education.
