Abstract

The increase in students with diverse cultural backgrounds challenges traditional approaches to teaching and learning mathematics. Along with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics? Principles and Standards, and the teacher standards from the National Educational Technology Standards guidelines support the use of technology in addressing diversity. This discussion addresses the issue of equity in mathematics teaching and learning from multicultural and technological perspectives. The elements of the presentation include a focus on understanding mathematics learning, highlights of the importance of a multicultural perspective, and insights for implementing a perspective that enhances mathematical understanding and promotes equity for all students.
