Abstract

Abstract: Online education, which has become increasingly popular among working adult learners (WAL) in the last few years, may have to undergo curricular and methodological transformations to best serve this growing student population. Based on out teaching experiences and research on over 20,000 distinct learner outcomes, certain definable traits seem to emerge from the WAL. Compared to traditional college students, the WAL has distinct characteristics developed through life and professional experiences; the WAL has a different, mature, established views and attitudes; and can be more critical, more independent and more highly motivated. It would seem that a fundamental understanding of adult learning theory in an online environment is imperative in order to adequately meet the needs of this distinct population.
