Abstract
This paper defines several key requirements for successful cooperative learning, which we have elaborated during the last years with goal to set up new forms of cooperative learning. Without bringing them into a special order, these main design criteria are the integra-tion of synchronous and asynchronous forms of cooperation and the persistence of a learning process, the formation of a common group context or common information room, roles and ac-cess rights, annotations and structured chat as well as rooms as places for collaboration.
