Web-based cases can provide learners opportunities to apply theory in practice. Through a realistic setting and formative feedback on a theory's use, cases are learning environments where users can make their thinking visible and receive input on their reasoning. This poster presents the Educational Theory Into Practice Software (ETIPS). The ETIPS develop and provide formative feedback on preservice teachers' ability to apply educational theory into practice in schools on instructional decision-making in 3 areas: technology integration and implementation; advocacy and equity; and teaching at-risk youth. In the cases learners are posed a challenge that requires they explore and collect data from the "school" and they then compose an essay stating their instructional decision and its rationale. Automated essay scoring supports multiple revisions of essay drafts, and visualization tools illustrate the learner's schema of the theory under consideration.
