Abstract

The purpose of this study is to provide instructional implications of using handheld computers through functional mapping of PDA uses for various learning activities in classrooms. The study collected cases of using handheld computers to improve teaching and learning in K-12 classroom settings and identified what kinds of learning activities were supported by PDA's functions. Three subsequent coding strategies were applied to develop categories of functional uses of PDA in the learning activities, build connections, and finally elucidate the functional relationship among the categories. In conclusion, this study suggests what instructional considerations should be integrated in the handheld computer for the pedagogical purpose.
