Abstract
Schools use video production to motivate and engage students, and stimulate achievement. However, demands of technology and time have limited its take up. This project looks at the learning potential of one part of the process - editing - in science education. Editing specially filmed video to make a programme is time-efficient, and can be focussed on particular learning objectives more easily than when students make their own. The topic of homeopathy was chosen as a context for pupils to explore the role of evidence, experiment and explanation in science. We produced video clips of interviews with different experts, which students had to boil down to a two minute programme. The idea was that forcing them to decide what to select, and what order to present it in, would be an effective way to learn the ideas. Initial results indicate that students gain a more coherent understanding of the nature of science, and can use collaboration and self-assessment to enhance learning.
