Abstract
Abstract: The rapid evolution of wide area networks (WANs) creates both opportunities and challenges to the design of network infrastructures for schools and departments. The Alberta Government's initiative for SuperNet provides fibre optic connectivity to every school, health unit, municipality, and library in the Province of Alberta. Each school will obtain by July 2004 a 5 Mbps connection fully funded by Alberta Learning. The delivery of video content is a strategic issue for this network. This paper examines SuperNet and its edge connections on the delivery of approved video to K - 12 schools. It examines WAN bandwidth requirements and, in spite of significantly increased bandwidth, the need for video content delivery from within schools.
