Abstract

American public school personnel are under pressure like never before. Pushed by an increase in accountability, administrators must find ways to effectively prepare teachers to increase student achievement. The National Staff Development Council reaffirmed the need for effective teacher training with the requirement that by 2007, all teachers must have access to high quality professional development. One form of emerging professional development models are online professional development courses (OPDCs). This paper and presentation will examine OPDCs and discuss implications for their role in enhancing the growth of practicing teachers, as well as improving student achievement.
