Abstract
Abstract: Nursing Informatics has enormous potential to improve patient care. Many practicing nurses were educated before informatics concepts were included in nursing curricula. The Nursing Informatics Community (NIC) Program (http://nic.sdsu.edu) provides modular web-based training in informatics to prepare practicing nurses to understand and utilize informatics in their jobs as well as participate in the informatics revolution. This federally funded project has been completed and has three years of experience providing nurses with streaming modules. Access requires an Internet connected computer. Modules use text with audio. Some are designed for specific nurse populations. Content quizzes with feedback and resource listings are included. Topics include basic computer and nursing informatics concepts, web searching, and electronic patient records. U.S. nurses receive continuing education credit for completed modules. Program website and modules are demonstrated. Lessons learned during the three years of the project are discussed in detail.
