Abstract

Abstract: From the time a preservice teacher enters an institute of higher education until they graduate, a large amount of paperwork has been amassed. How do students collect, save and present their work in an orderly fashion? An e-portfolio is a good means of categorizing work of a preservice, undergraduate or graduate student to present to future employers. It is the basis for presenting exemplary work to be placed into an e-portfolio. E-portfolios are a vehicle to provide evidence of standards-based teaching competencies. Reflection and self-assessment are developed and reinforced through the use of e-portfolios. This paper will discuss how e-portfolios promote student learning and professional preparation, how e-portfolios serve as an assessment tool and how e-portfolios promote the engagement of students in authentic tasks in authentic contexts. A model will be demonstrated that attends to students' needs and simultaneously informs them as learners.
