Abstract
Online collaborative learning presents new challenges to the instructor. Changes in collaborative learning environments have changed the role of the instructor to one of facilitator and participant. Assessment also needs to change. This presentation describes the design of an evaluation system that enables individual, peer, and group assessment in online collaborative learning environments. An automated self and peer-assessment system is used to provide students and faculty with feedback on student's teamwork performance. It addresses the need for individual accountability in relation to teamwork success and provides an opportunity for the student to reflect on their learning and contributions to the team's social environment. The system utilizes Web-based rubrics and the course provides training on peer and self-assessment. The implications for research-based redesign of assessment systems and implementation in online courses will be demonstrated and discussed.
