Abstract

One of the biggest challenges facing online education is the retention of learners. Many learners who drop out of online courses do so because they do not feel socially engaged in the course. While much of the existing literature in this area examines the causes of learner attrition, very little attention has been given to practical strategies to address the recognized problem of social engagement in online courses. This paper identifies and demonstrates the use of several proven strategies for social engagement of online learners – strategies which are similar to traditional classroom techniques, but which have been specially adapted for the unique challenges of the online environment.
