Abstract

The Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) serves a unique and sizeable demographic population divided amongst three main campuses, as well as four extension centers. Serving a total of over 72,000 credit-seeking and non-credit students. In Spring 2012, CCBC passed the accreditation process with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Though the College overall received many commendations and was granted accreditation with many accolades, the Commission presented the College with three recommendations. One of those recommendations provided the basis of this study, to address low rates of retention, success and completion for online courses. This study examined various student characteristics, online learning characteristics and demographic data over six consecutive semesters to determine success rates in asynchronous versus synchronous courses at CCBC.
