Abstract

Outstanding work of the TSSA Collaborative, whose members include AASA, NSBA, NASSP, NAESP, AESA, the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), and the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), resulted in the Novmeber 2001 release of Technology Standards for School Administrators (TSSA). The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), who managed the development of the TSSA Standards as well as earlier works including NETS for Students and NETS for Teachers, is expanding on these core technology standards for superintendents, central office program directors, and principals by including standards for district-level technology coordinators and building-level technology facilitators. In addition, they are leading a collaborative effort nationally to identify and document essential system conditions in school systems and institutions of higher education that are necessary to support achievement of NETS for Administrators, and they have assembled an array of resources to support professional learning related to these standards by school and university leaders. The NETS for Administrators project also identifies critical issues in preparing new administrators to assume technology leadership roles, and in supporting professional growth for practicing school and district leaders in the area of technology. This presentation is a summary of the Technology Standards for School Administrators (TSSA) and a status report on the ISTE project, NETS for Administrators. Participants will receive an early draft of the NETS for Administrators document and they will learn how they can have significant formative input into the final version of that product by (1) reacting to the standards draft, (2) by identifying high-yield resources which empower technology leaders and support their professional learning related to technology leadership, (3) provide recommendations for assessing the NETS for Administrators, and (4) by recommending case studies of leadership situations that can enlighten administrators across the nation.
