Abstract

With a total of 396,000 square kilometres and a population of 74,983, the Northern Health Region (NHR) has the unique challenge of planning and providing health services to a small population in an area that totals 62% of the Province of Manitoba’s total land mass. Northern rural and remote communities are widely dispersed with many only accessible by air or rail. Meeting the orientation and continuing educational needs of healthcare providers in this region was an ongoing challenge; therefore, the establishment of a region-wide learning management system (LMS) was critical to patient safety. After close to a two year hiatus from signing a contract with an external vendor for implementation of an LMS, a contract employee began working on the LMS, and within 5 months the NHR’s LMS was launched. One year later, ¾ of the NHR’s employees, students, and workers have completed numerous online modules.
