Abstract

This paper suggests that there is a problem with the quality of e-learning content and shows that one solution to the problem is to return to the question of the quality of teaching and learning. We have well established criteria for effective face-to-face teaching and these same criteria can be employed in order to produce "good" e-learning solutions. This strategy recommends itself particularly in terms of engaging lecturers with technology in an educational environment defined by the continued dominance of traditional teaching methods. Whilst we can produce good e-learning solutions, e-learning environments provide for the possibility of more authentic and engaging learning experiences. Whilst recognising this fact, the continuing dominance of traditional lecturing together with a lack of realistic financing for e-learning, suggests that e-learning environments are for the innovators. To address the majority we must continue to strive for good e-learning solutions embedded in communities of engaged learners.
