Abstract

Teacher education and training will be experiencing a millennium make over as online environments become more popular and accepted. National agencies such as ISTE (International Society for Technology Education) have begun publishing manuals for planning such training(James, 2002). The time is appropriate, and there are many benefits according to several authors (Abramson, 2000; MacDonald, 2001; Treacy, 2002). Faculty have been encouraged to utilize collaborative learning with their students. But can collaborative activities be applied to online training for teachers? This paper will review the current literature on collaborative activities in online environments, and the effectiveness of these activities in that environment. It will explore and discuss two research questions: What collaborative activities are being used in an online environment? and How do collaborative activities in online environments effect the learning process?
