Abstract

The number of virtual schools in North America currently exceeds 100, and over thirty publicly funded cybercharter schools have been launched in the past five years. The movement of students and teachers into virtual schools has important implications for education. Will virtual school students be prepared for careers, higher education and adult life in a competitive and global future? Do virtual schools adequately serve all students? Are teachers prepared to effectively teach in the virtual school environment? Do virtual have the facilities and infrastructure necessary to provide high quality education, and are the resources well used? The primary purpose of the panel is to bring together knowledge of virtual schools as a forum for scholars and others with interests in virtual schools. The panelists have experience in research and practice regarding virtual schools. The panel chair is editing a scholarly book on virtual schools, and the panelists are contributors to the book.
