Abstract

As teacher education programs struggle to integrate technology, many programs are moving away from "the course": the one technology course that all teacher candidates take. Many schools have found that a separate course is still necessary. This leaves two challenges: creating a course that uses technology for a real purpose in a way that promotes technology integration, rather than technology for technology's sake; and creating a course that meets the needs of diverse learners with a range of experience levels with technology. We have modified the problem based learning (PBL) model to provide a student-centered course that meets these challenges. This paper describes the power of the PBL model and how we have modified it to provide a wide range of students a learning environment in which they can learn technology applications at their own pace and apply them to relevant learning activities that integrate technology into the curriculum.
