Abstract

Museums are faced with the challenge of providing virtual visitors with a rich online experience and an education that is different, but potentially deeper, than a physical visit. For children, museums have the additional challenge of finding the right balance between learning and fun to keep children engaged while meeting their learning objectives. Plimoth Plantation, a recreated 1627 village located in Plymouth, Massachusetts, sought to expand its online presence and to provide standards-based education for children and teachers. Plimoth Plantation's Online Learning Center (OLC) uses multimedia in an interactive environment to teach about the lives of the Wampanoag People and the early Colonists who settled in the US. The OLC, entitled "You the Historian: Investigating the First Thanksgiving", challenges children to become historians and teaches them what an historian is, how primary sources and oral histories are used, and how historical events are interpreted and reinterpreted.
