Abstract

This poster demonstration reports on one portion of a PT3 project at the University of Georgia. EMMA (Electronic Markup and Management Application) is a computer application that uses XML (Extensible Markup Language) to revise the way in which we both read and write about texts. In the current project, EMMA is used in a "Shakespeare in the Classroom" course to facilitate students' textual analysis of literature; collaborative Shakespeare projects; and portfolio production. The course involves both Teacher Education students and English majors who have expressed an interest in teaching, plus high school students from two nearby counties. EMMA, as an open-source, cross-platform application, is free, easy to download, and simple to use and therefore works particularly well for collaborative projects at a distance. Finally, in this setting, EMMA helps students to see how technology they use in their university courses can be transferred to the secondary-school classroom.
