Abstract
This paper reports on the analysis, design and implementation of reusable ActionScript 3 (AS3) classes in the School of Medicine, University of Southampton. The AS3 classes were developed in order to allow the creation of complex bespoke eLearning resources. The AS3 classes provide a clear structure to application technical development improving the efficiency of the development process and allowing better coordination between developers. The AS3 classes are combined with the creative design opportunities provided by the authoring tool to produce visually attractive, well structured applications. Current development includes using software engineering design patterns to improve the flexibility and reusability of the AS3 classes.
