Abstract
The University of Southampton Medical School’s move toward patient-centred and technology-enhanced learning has led the School to the development of different types of virtual patients. In pre-clinical year 2, the Virtual Patients are interactive learning materials facilitating contextualised learning of basic and clinical sciences. They provide a framework that link curriculum activities taught in the week helping students integrate their learning. Each case has a clinical scenario, presented in 3D animations or videos, and basic science-related quizzes with feedback and interactive tasks. Students can test their understanding of the basic science in a clinical context and receives individualised feedback on their performance. This encourages students to reflect upon their learning and helps them identify the areas where their understanding is insufficient. With the links provided for appropriate learning materials, they can improve their understanding of the topic area.
