Abstract
This paper provides an analysis of a virtual course for health sciences professors: "Internet on higher education: resources and applications". Activity Theory was the main theoretical and methodological approach adopted in the development and evaluation of this constructivist course. Results of analyses of the virtual course implementation with a group of 37 faculty members from different Brazilian public universities, revealed the dynamics of the relationship among the basic components of the activity - subjects, community and object - and their mediations, in three main relations: subject-tools-object, subject-rules-community and community-labor organization-object. The main conclusions regard the challenges of developing an open-ended approach with the following demands for faculty staff: to learn how to use new technologies; to share objectives, allowing the construction of a community identity and to learn cooperatively by integrating different expertise.
