E-commerce is opening new markets as well as extending existing business practices. It includes such diverse activities as electronic trading of goods and services, on-line delivery of digital media content, share trading, electronics funds transfer, commercial auctions, public procurement as well as direct consumer marketing. While the technologies and business practices associated with the web hold great promise with potential significant efficiency gains or market growth, the area is relatively new and lacks the knowledge base required to support decision-making. This paper examines the potential of using option theory as a structured and explicit way of thinking about possibilities, actions and decisions, allowing managers to react to future conditions and enhance decision making in this new and evolving technology and business domain.
