In the last decade, the K-12 learning environment has seen a marked increase in the use of computer-based instruction to enhance learning. One area that has lagged behind this trend is writing instruction. The subjective nature of essay assessment and overly objective nature of computer programming is the primary culprit. Moreover, essay writing instruction at the secondary level can be plagued by poor teacher preparation, a general lack of emphasis for the subject, and lack of adherence to common standards. To help fill this gap, an e-learning module for teaching essay writing will be developed based on the ideas of faded work examples, the element of adaptivity found in intelligent tutoring systems, and using Florida FOCUS lessons to improve writing instruction.
