In a knee-jerk reaction to the current digital practices of many of today’s youth, educators and researchers are advocating a return to the natural world and subsequent limitation of digital consumption. As obesity and attention deficit rates rise, many are turning a weary and accusatory eye towards the increased emphasis on all things digital. But do the unstructured and natural elements need to be at odds with the digital environments that are defining the higher education classrooms of today? Can the digital world actually complement the natural/experiential world and vice versa? Though disparate in their environmental contexts, technological and adventure-based methodologies are complimentary approaches for creating truly meaningful and authentic learning experiences. By implementing technological aspects into an adventure-based curriculum, participants are exposed to deeper reflective practices, authentic forms of communication for discussing personal growth, and a deeper sense personal connection to whole group growth and understanding.
